Carpenter | Lowings Architecture & Design is based in London since 2001 and sprang from the twelve years that Luke spent in New York working with James and others to develop the well-established art-based studio James Carpenter Design Associates.
James was trained as a sculptor at the Rhode Island School of Design in the USA, working in particular in the glass-blowing studio. This craft-based background has given him a strong underpinning in material technologies and a feel for the fabrication of projects as well as a fundamental appreciation for daylight. He was a principal at C | L until 2018.
Luke first started working with James in 1989 having completed an MA in Architecture at the Royal College of Art in London. He’d spent some years working as an architect in London prior to the move to New York, perhaps most notably for Richard Rogers and Partners. Luke qualified as an architect in the UK in 1992, and in New York State in 2001. In 2018 he became the sole owner of C | L.
A shared interest in the experiential qualities of daylight in public spaces, materials and structure, has led to a unique body of work at every scale in locations all over the world for a broad range of clients.
This ranges from interior domestic-scale projects to building-scale facades, unique sculptural installations, landscape-scale interventions, insertions within buildings, street furniture and infrastructure.
C | L‘s understanding of the need to follow up a powerful concept with detail design, careful fabrication and installation has resulted in a rare depth of experience. The practice has produced projects of great visual and technical refinement through a collaborative process with clients and architects, developed over many years and can call upon the services of world-class engineers, fabricators and installers. C | L has been instrumental in the development and refinement of the use of strucutral glass.
The projects presented here show examples of C | L‘s work along with some of the key projects delivered by James Carpenter‘s studio in New York (JCDA) and demonstrate the wide range of architectural, sculptural and spatial insight and expertise which James and Luke bring to each design they are commissioned to undertake.
